2-D Design
When it comes to design, i prefer to take a more traditional approach. To be able to create a piece without the use of computers for me creates a sense of freedom that I feel that I do not get anywhere else. During my first year of college I took a class in 2-D Design, it was the best class that I have taken in my college career. We all of our projects were in black and white and we explored the use of lines, curves, shapes, contrast, and collage. All of the pieces below are from that class and are done by hand using paper, rubber cement, and an exacto knife.

![]() Strawberry and AppleFor this particular piece we were told to create something with similar but contrasting natural objects. Created freehand with paper and an exacto knife. | ![]() Where did nature go?A man versus nature piece created for the Northwestern Michigan College art magazine. I wanted to play with the idea of man taking over to the point where the only glimpse of nature that can be seen is through the billboards in the city. The buildings where created with graphite texture rubbings and the billboards were created with cutouts from those rubbings and pencil details. | ![]() Powell and LoyAn exercise in working in terms of high contrast this piece was created from a picture of William Powell and Myrna Loy after they worked together for the movie The Thin Man. It was created entirely from cut paper that was attached with rubber cement. The original photo had many dark shadows to work with so I traced them and used that template to cut out the image on black paper. |
![]() Cassatt RedoneThe final project from a 2-D class that I took. The goal was to recreate a famous painting using the techniques that we had learned over the course of the class: lines, curves, shapes, and collage. | ![]() 006.JPGA design created with lines of varying thickness. | ![]() LinesA design created by using only lines |
![]() One of the first designs I created for the class. The assignment was to convey emotions through a design, we were also given a limit as to how many circles could be used.. In this case it was celebration. This design was created with a sharpie and a circle template. | ![]() An exercise in combining lines, curves, and shapes. We were also encouraged to use grey in our designs. |
