Graphic Design

Graphic Design is something that I was not introduced to fully unitl I started at Michigan Tech. It has created a new challege and interest for me. It has given me the opportunity for me to expand my skills and to think in a new way beyond just creating soming on paper. Over the course of my college career my skills in the realm of graphic design have gone from more creative to more technical, depending on the demands of the project.

One of my favorite projects to work on was for an internship that I had for two summers. I was an intern for BB Marketing Group based out of Libertyville, IL. As an intern I did much of the busy and background work for many projects. One in particular was creating new employee profiles for one of their clients. They wanted someting visually exciting, easy to follow, and wanted a space for a photo to be included. I designed two word templates and created a format for the client to follow with the rest for their profiles. The two that I created had a similar feel. The first one I had used the company's colors to add interest and created a new format for the typed information. The second I stayed with the same text format and stuck to one color and kept the look very simple.

Some of my more creative graphic design work was created in the graphic and information design course I took during my first semester after transfering. For one project the goal was to create a logo for a fictional business, the class was split on half and assigned a business. My half of the class was assigned an ice cream shop called Mom's Ice Cream. When creating the logo I wanted to create something very different and had a more vintage feel to it. I sketched many mock ups and finally settled on a design that included a 1950's style dress and apron. I then scan the image into Adobe Illustrator, it was quite the learning curve trying to create something digitally that I had already created by hand, though I am very proud of the result.

Most recently I was the Web & Graphic Designer for Cone Drive Operations, Inc. based in Traverse City, MI. During my time there I was incharge of creating all marketing material. The largest of these projects was helping with the refresh of the company brand. I designed an updated logo to reflect the direction the company was heading.

Another project I had worked on while at Cone Drive was a product range brochure. they had wanted a way for all of their products to be displayed all in one place and include all of their technical specifications. Up to this point they only had indivdual product sheets and this allows them now to appeal to more customers that may find a product that they would not have before.
